St. Jude Children Research Hospital FUNdraising

posted Jun 6, 2017, 10:13 AM by Kimberly Ward   [ updated Jun 6, 2017, 10:14 AM ]

Mrs. Jennifer Godwin's second grade class at Whiteville Primary School engaged in a community service project to raise money for St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. These four students chose to participate in the Math-a-thon by completing a math booklet in one week. While doing this, the children asked for donations from family and friends in the community. Together, these four raised $607.00 to give to the boys and girls at St. Jude's.

Mrs. Godwin wants her students to understand the importance of giving back to the community and to others in need. Each year, Godwin asks her class to participate in the Math-a-thon so that her kids can help other kids who are sick and in need while utilizing their math skills.

These four students who participated earned a certificate of thanks and appreciation. One student, Gus Wooten, raised enough to receive a t-shirt and medal. Wooten also earned prizes for additional monies raised. Through his own kindness and generosity, character traits that he possesses and Godwin focuses on in her teaching, Gus elected to donate all of his prizes back to the children at St. Jude's. He hopes that these toys will bring a bright spot to a sick child's day.

As a breast cancer survivor and an elementary educator, St. Jude's is dear to Mrs. Godwin's heart. She hopes that her children who participate in the Math-a-thon each year can show off what they have learned in class while helping other children who are battling illnesses. Her goal is for each of her children to leave her class not only smarter but also better citizens in the community who are kind and care for others.

Mrs. Owens' kindergarten class participated in the RAK-A-THON. They participated in random acts of kindness in the classroom, at home, and in our school community. Their community project was to collect items for a student in our community that lost their belongings in a house fire. This is the result of the project.  Way to go!!!!!!!!
